Diversity in MMORPGs
Playing MMORPGs such as World of Warcraft a few times a week has really been a treat. The problem with these games is that they are very addictive but only if you let them be. Thankfully, I do not but many of my friends have severe problems with this game. There are, however, many diverse people that I enjoy playing with in which I talk to over a voice software program called ventrilo (www.ventrilo.com). It allows the user to connect into a specific server while allowing other people to join the channel as well (most servers are password protected and if you create one you can do this).
When I do play the game I have loads of fun speaking with people that are local to me as well as people in completely different countries. For instance, there is a player named horke who lives in Seattle, a player named Leony that lives in Indonesia, Exinferis which lives in Australia, and a dance instructor/lawyer from Brazil named Bullshill. It is amazing to see how well we all get along with each other and the topics of conversation are priceless. I love learning about their various cultures and enjoy hearing everyone talk with a completely different accent. I suppose I am lucky in the aspect that I am in contact with so much culture at the same time. I’m not promoting video gaming but I feel that not everyone gets to experience this type of communication. I have built online relationships with these people and will someday meet them in real life. Sometimes, when I am doing my homework I will log-in to ventrilo just to speak with these people because they have amazing personalities and are very open to just about anything you want to talk about. I have even received public speaking help from my lawyer friend name bullshill in Brazil. I love having my regular friends and my online friends because it opens my eyes up to different cultures every day.

This is one of my favorite aspects of these sorts of games. (Though I understand there is some tension in respect to “gold mining” practices)
